A piano is one of the hardest things to move and one of the worst to get wrong. They're enormously heavy, the weight is unevenly distributed, the finish scratches if you look at it sideways, and the internal mechanism can be knocked out of tune — or damaged outright — by rough handling. This is not a job for a regular moving crew with a regular dolly. Playhouse Moving moves pianos with the right equipment and the careful, deliberate technique they require.

Uprights and grands

We move spinet, console, studio, and full upright pianos, as well as baby grands and grand pianos. Each type has its own handling requirements — grands often need partial disassembly of legs and pedals and proper positioning on a piano board, while uprights demand careful balance and control on stairs. We bring the approach each instrument calls for.

The equipment a piano demands

Pianos require specialized equipment: piano boards (skid boards), heavy-duty straps, padding, and sometimes a dolly built for the load. Just as important is crew experience — knowing how to balance the weight, control the descent on stairs, and pivot through doorways without slamming a corner. The combination of the right gear and the right hands is what protects your instrument.

Stairs, tight turns, and tricky access

Most piano damage happens on stairs and in doorways, and Austin has plenty of both — historic homes with narrow staircases, second-floor apartments, tight hallway turns. We plan the route before we lift, protect the walls and floors along the way, and move slowly and deliberately. If the access is genuinely difficult, we'll tell you honestly before the day rather than discovering it mid-lift.

Care for your instrument

Beyond the move itself, we treat your piano as the valuable instrument it is — fully padded, secured for transport so it can't shift, and set down gently in its new spot. Note that we move pianos but don't tune them; we recommend having yours tuned a couple of weeks after the move, once it's settled into the new room's climate. Piano Movers FAQs

Piano moves are quoted based on the type (upright vs. grand), the access on both ends, and stairs. Because they need special equipment and experienced handling, they're priced above a standard furniture move. Contact us for a free, specific quote.

No, we move but don't tune. We recommend tuning a couple of weeks after the move, once the piano has settled into the new room's temperature and humidity.
We fully pad and wrap the instrument, secure it so it can't shift in transit, and protect your floors, walls, and doorframes along the route. The finish and the mechanism both stay protected.
For most people, yes — pianos are extremely heavy, unevenly weighted, and easy to damage or get hurt by. The cost of a professional move is small next to a damaged instrument or injury.
